Starting a Side Business? Do Your Marketing in This Order

A workshop bench with four numbered drawers, laid out in order

I run a side business. Actually I run a few. I have a full time job at an ad agency, and then there is this, and then there are a couple of projects I keep going because they teach me things I can use at work. So when somebody in Wesley Chapel tells me they have started something on the side and they have maybe five hours a week to give it, I know exactly what that feels like.

The problem is never effort. It is order. Most people start with the thing that feels like marketing, which is usually a logo or a social media account, and six months later they have a nice looking Instagram and no customers.

Here is the order I would actually go in.

First, make sure you exist where people look

Before a website, before anything, claim your Google Business Profile. It is free, it takes twenty minutes, and for a local service business in Wesley Chapel it will out-perform everything else you do for the first year.

Fill in every field. Real service area, real hours, real photos of real work. Not stock images. Somebody in Meadow Pointe deciding whether to call you can tell the difference.

Then go and check what the AI tools say about you. Ask ChatGPT who the best plumber in Wesley Chapel is. Ask it about your business by name. People search this way now, and being invisible there is a new way to lose work that did not exist three years ago. That whole side of things, ranking in the links and getting named inside the answers, is what SEO, AEO and GEO covers.

Second, make it stupidly easy to contact you

This is the one people skip, and it is the cheapest win there is.

Your phone number should be tappable on a phone. Not typed out as text. Tappable. Your form should ask for three things, not eleven. And when somebody fills it in, you should find out within a minute, not when you next check an inbox.

I have looked at a lot of small business sites where the inquiries were arriving somewhere nobody checked. Not a marketing problem. A plumbing problem, in the literal sense. Fix that before you spend a dollar on ads. Lead generation is mostly this, plus the follow up that catches what slips.

Third, the website

Notice this is third.

A side business does not need ten pages. It needs one page that loads fast on a phone and plainly asks for the call. Most small business sites fail at exactly those two things. Fixing the speed and the call to action on a site you already have usually matters more than a rebuild.

When you are ready for a real one, it should be search ready from the first day rather than retrofitted a year later, and it should be yours to run. That is what a proper website build gets you.

Fourth, automate the parts you already hate

You will know these when you hit them. The quote you forgot to follow up. The review request you never send. The same five texts you type every week.

Do not automate on day one. Wait until the work is real and repetitive, then hand the boring middle of it to a system. Automations are worth the most when they are replacing something you are genuinely already doing by hand.

What actually works locally

Wesley Chapel has grown enormously and it is still growing. That cuts both ways. There is a lot of new construction and a lot of new households who do not have a guy yet. There is also somebody new advertising every month.

A few things that hold up around here.

Name the neighbourhoods. People do not search “Pasco County”. They search Meadow Pointe, Seven Oaks, Wiregrass, Epperson, New Tampa, Lutz, Land O’ Lakes. If you serve those places, say so in plain words on your site.

The local Facebook and Nextdoor groups are real. Somebody asks for a recommendation in a Wesley Chapel group most days. You cannot spam these. You can be the person who answers the actual question without pitching, and it works better than anything you can buy.

Reviews beat everything. Ask every single happy customer, the same day, with a link. This is the highest return activity available to a small local business and almost nobody does it consistently.

Do not bother trying to rank for Tampa right away. Tampa is a knife fight. Wesley Chapel, Lutz and Land O’ Lakes are winnable. Win those first, then widen.

What I would skip at the start

Logo agonising. A second social account you will not post to. Paid ads before your phone number is tappable and your form works. Anything with a twelve month contract.

The honest version

You will not do all four of these at once, and you should not try. Pick the first one, do it properly, then move on. A side business that gets one thing right every month is in a completely different position a year later than one that did a bit of everything badly.

If you want somebody to look at what you have got and tell you which of these you actually need first, send it over. I will tell you honestly, including if the answer is that you do not need me yet.

Tell me what is not working.

No audit funnel and no discovery call about a discovery call. Send me the site and tell me what you wish it did, and I will tell you whether I can help.
